Number masking is a technique that connects two parties on a call, or in messaging, through a temporary virtual number, so neither side sees the other’s real phone number. It’s widely used to protect privacy in situations where two people need to communicate but shouldn’t have permanent, direct access to each other’s actual contact details.
Instead of a customer and, say, a delivery driver exchanging real numbers, both are given a shared virtual number to call or text each other through. The platform’s backend routes the call or message between the two real numbers behind the scenes, while each party only ever sees the masked number on their caller ID or in their messages. Once the interaction is no longer needed, typically after the delivery or trip is complete, the masked number mapping can expire, cutting off any further direct contact between the two.
It’s worth distinguishing this from Direct Inward Dialing (DID), which routes an external caller directly to a specific internal extension. DID is about efficient internal routing for a business’s own phone system; number masking is specifically about hiding two external parties’ real numbers from each other during a temporary interaction.
