A 160 series number is a telephone number range in India reserved for transactional and service voice calls, such as OTPs, delivery updates, appointment reminders, and account alerts, as distinct from promotional calls. It’s the counterpart to the 140 series, which is reserved for promotional and telemarketing calls, and the two exist specifically so a network can tell them apart automatically.
A bank confirming a payment or a courier confirming a delivery window is sending a call the customer is actively expecting, sometimes anxiously refreshing their phone for. Treating that the same way as an unsolicited sales call, both for regulatory purposes and for spam filtering, would mean time-sensitive OTPs and delivery confirmations risk getting blocked alongside genuine spam. The 160 series exists so networks can whitelist this category of traffic with more confidence, and so DND rules apply differently to it than to promotional calls.
This category underpins much of the day-to-day customer support communication that businesses in BFSI and logistics rely on.
