140 Series Number

140 Series Number

What is a 140 Series Number?

A 140 series number is a telephone number range in India, starting with the prefix 140, that TRAI has designated for promotional and telemarketing voice calls made by registered telemarketers. Any business placing outbound promotional calls in India is expected to do so from a 140-prefixed number, so telecom operators and recipients can identify the call as commercial in nature before they even answer.

Why the series exists

Before this numbering system, promotional calls often came from regular mobile or landline numbers, making it nearly impossible for operators and consumers to distinguish spam from a personal call, and equally hard for regulators to trace violations back to anyone. Reserving a distinct series for promotional voice traffic let networks apply Do Not Disturb (DND) filtering at the network level, rate-limit commercial calls, and hold a specific registered telemarketer accountable when something goes wrong.

Getting a 140 number

  • Register as a Principal Entity on the Distributed Ledger Technology (DLT) platform used for telecom compliance in India.
  • Register as a telemarketer and get headers and templates approved through the same DLT system.
  • Obtain 140-series numbers through a licensed telecom operator or a compliant communications platform, rather than repurposing a regular business number for promotional calls.

What happens if you don’t use one

Placing promotional calls from an unregistered number, even a legitimate business landline, increasingly gets flagged, filtered, or blocked outright by telecom operators running spam detection at the network level. That’s a separate problem from the regulatory penalties TRAI can apply; a business can be fully willing to pay a fine and still find its calls simply aren’t getting through, because operators have started treating unregistered promotional traffic as junk by default.

Use cases

140 numbers are the backbone of compliant outbound marketing campaigns in India, covering telesales, promotional offers, and re-engagement calling at scale.

Benefits and compliance impact

  • Legal compliance: using a 140 number for promotional calls is generally a requirement, not just a best practice.
  • Lower blocking risk: registered, correctly categorized traffic is far less likely to be filtered by carrier spam detection.
  • Clear separation from transactional traffic: keeping promotional calls on 140 numbers protects transactional and service numbers, such as 160-series numbers, from being mistakenly flagged.
  • Traceability: registered numbers make it far easier to audit calling activity and respond to a regulatory inquiry or customer complaint.
